How You Can Listen to Podcasts

    February 28, 2019

As podcasting grows in 2019, a common comment I hear is, “I don’t even know how to listen to podcasts.” Indeed, it’s not the most intuitive thing. There are lots of different ways to get shows, and each show could ostensibly do different things. It’s not like TV, where you buy a dedicated device and then can channel surf. And with Spotify promising exclusive podcast content, it could get a little more confusing. So…how can you listen to podcasts?

How I am Automating More of My Business

    November 26, 2021

One of my goals when I started getting serious about my business was to automate more. I knew I did a lot of things manually, and there were lots of things that I could do better. At the very least, there I were things I didn’t need to be doing manually. In my master mind group, one of the members said this to me: “I wonder what you’d be able to do if you had less to do.” So my homework was to make a list of all the things I could automate or outsource. It was a great exercise, and I learned a lot about my process. Here it is, so that you can do that same thing.

    Switching to Apple’s Native Apps

    October 25, 2017

Since iOS 11 came out, I’ve been forming new opinions on apps and what I want to use on my phone. When I was an Android user, I would try not to pay for apps, and had reasonable success doing so. Call it the open source mentality, sure, but Google also had pretty great native apps — especially when they rolled out Material Design. When I switched to iOS, I went a little app crazy. I wanted to try everything. I was also more willing to pay for apps, mostly because more apps cost money. But recently, I’ve decided to cut out most 3rd party apps and focus on the native apps Apple sends with the phone. Here’s why.

My Thoughts on the iPad Pro 10.5″

    July 10, 2017

So I’m a bit of a technophile and an early adopter. Always have been; I had a Palm M100 in 9th grade because it looked cool. Plus it helped me keep my busy schedule of drama club and homework straight. Since then, I’ve tried to get new tech sooner rather than later. Sometimes I write about it. When the iPad Pro was announced, it wasn’t something I was able to buy. But I’ve been looking for a good way to draw on a screen since my first “tablet” in 2005. Well, I was able to get the iPad Pro 10.5″ this year; so how does it stack up?

    The Apple Keynote Drinking Game

    September 8, 2015

The time is once again upon us: Apple is presumably announcing a new iPhone for people to clamor over, then spend all of their money on. This year, I’ve decided there should be a drinking game, so here are the rules:

    Take a sip if:

    • You hear, “It just works”
    • You hear, “Smooth”
    • They tell us about a feature we already knew about from the rumor mill
    • You hear, “Retina”
    • Someone you know gets excited about a feature that already existed on Android
    • They list some stat that can really only apply to Apple products

    Take a gulp if:

    • Something old is presented as new and revolutionary (like Copy and Paste, or notifications).
    • They announce something that forces you to buy new accessories
    • They take a jab at Android or any other competitor
    • They blatantly stole an app and integrated it into the iPhone/iPad.

    Finish your drink if:

    • You hear, “This is the best iPhone/iPad/Macbook we’ve ever made.”
    • Tim Cook comes out dressed as Steve Jobs
    • They talk about the Samsung ruling

    Mobile Browser Testing

    July 3, 2012

So this Responsive Web thing is all the rage these days, and rightfully so. As mobile browsers get more powerful, we can do a lot of great things that used to be thought of as only possible on  the desktop. We no longer need to have redirects on mobile that take our users to a separate site; we can have it all, no matter what device they are viewing our sites from. I recently updated both my site and my blog to be responsive (I’m still working some kinks out of the blog- I’m sorry for the mess). However, as mobile browsers are becoming powerful and plentiful, we run into the same issues we’re seeing on the desktop- we need to test our mobile friendly versions in several different browsers across multiple platforms.

    • 2009 Called (xkcd): I will have to remember this one.
    • .tel, .xxx, and .mobi are all pointless and idiotic: Agreed. There’s really no way to prevent sites that fall under these categories from purchasing the .com equivalent, or vise-vera.
    • The State of the Freelancer: I love me some nice infographics.Especially helpful ones.
    • CBS will Remove some Showtime Shows from Netflix (bgr): Translation: People weren’t buying Californication or Dexter on DVD anymore. I guess I won’t become a Californication fan then…

    • Amazon.com lets you play with an Android virtual machine, try apps before you buy them (engadget): This is pure awesome. Couple that with the fact that they give an app away everyday, and you’ve got a really great Android Market competitor.
    • 5 Things They Never Told You (cracked): This is by far the best cracked.com article I’ve ever read.
    • 18 Million WordPress.com Websites Now Available in iPad Format (mashable): They are using a (free!) plugin called onswipe. It’s now being used on this site as well!
    • The Path to Productivity: Short Hours, More Breaks (workawesome): I like to break my day down into tasks that I complete then follow with a quick break. However, if I am in a groove, do not disturb me!

    • Microsoft to Discontinue Zune (bgr): That is a damn shame, as the Zune is a MUCH better mp3 player than the iPod. Maybe if Microsoft ran an ad or two…
    • Making Twitter More Secure: HTTPS: Twitter has now added an option to force all of your Twitter dealings to use secured browsing. I strongly recommend turning this setting on.
    • You Have a Disease; Here’s the Cure (nettuts+): Just because the Internet is always on doesn’t mean we have to be too.

    • RIM Preparing to Bring BBM to iOS and Android (engadget): This might be the only reason people still use Blackberrys. That being said, I’d probably pay a couple of bucks for this app.
    • The New iPad (gizmodo): The iPad 2 was announced this week and I briefly took a look. I think I’d still go with a Motorola XOOM if I were to upgrade from the iPad.
    • To Root or not to Root (android.appstorm): I’ve been considering this for a while, and I will probably root in the near future.
    • How to Root an Android Device (android.appstorm): …and I’ll probably use this guide.
