  • On Generosity: My Favorite Christmas Story

I knew from a young age I wanted to play the drums.

I got my first small kit when I was 5, and when my friends and I started a “band” I played buckets. When I was 15 years old, I knew I needed a real kit.

So 24 years ago to the day (December 20th), my dad took me to Alto Music — the local music store in my home town. We looked around at the sets, but they were all too expensive.

My dad didn’t say it explicitly, but we’d be hard-pressed to get a drum set within our budget.

It was apparently obvious, because a kind man named Alan came over to us. Alan was probably around the same age I am now…maybe a little younger. He told us that he was in the store looking for an electric kit.

See, Alan and his wife just became new parents to a baby girl, and he couldn’t play his acoustic set any more. He wouldn’t be able to for a number years.

He said he saw the look on my dad’s face as we were looking at the prices and made a decision: that he would sell his set to us, cheap. How cheap?

It was a black, 5-piece Yamaha that would have easily sold for $800. But that wasn’t all. He also had 5 Zildjian A Custom cymbals: high hats (natch), a crash, ride, crash-ride, and splash. That Ride was at least $300 alone. All-in, it was probably a $1500 set.

He sold it to us for $3001. I couldn’t believe my own dumb luck. But my dad, who was much smarter than I was, couldn’t believe this man’s honest to God generosity.

He gave us his address2. We picked it up 3 days later, and I was the proud owner of my first real drum set. The first song I actually learned was probably Hanging by a Moment, by Lifehouse, which I can still play today.

  • 2020 Gift Guides

It has become a bit of a time-honored tradition for me to do gift guides around the holidays. I often get asked for recommendations on office, podcast, and pen gear. I write the gift guides up on my personal site, but this episode goes into a bit more depth for people who work from home, podcast, and more!

  • 2015 Gift Guides

It has become a bit of a time-honored tradition for me to do gift guides around the holidays. This year I decided instead of making yet another post, I’ll create this page and child pages that I can update each year. I have some big plans for when I (finally) redesign this site, but for now, check ’em out:

What other gift guides do you want to see? I was thinking about putting together one for cigar smokers as well as some stuff I use every day. Have an idea for a guide I could make? Leave it in the comments!

  • Quick Tip: Turn off Amazon Wishlist Spoilers

While talking to my mother, whom I sent my Amazon Wishlist to for gift ideas, she told me to not check Amazon until Christmas because she bought stuff off of my list and didn’t want me to see what she got. Luckily, Amazon has thought of this, and there is a really simple way to make sure that you don’t see when people buy things off your list.

    1. Go to your Amazon Wish List.
    2. In the List Actions drop-down (towards the top of the list, on the right), click Update list profile.
    3. Check  “Don’t spoil my surprises.”
    4. Click Save.

That’s it! You can now view your list without worry of spoilers.

  • How to do Black Friday Shopping from Home

I remember when my parents first bought something online for Christmas. It was 1998, we had just gotten a family computer (a good one) and a reasonable Internet connection. They ordered from from Dick’s Sporting Goods, but first tried an unfortunate URL that brought that to a site they were definitely not expecting. Being the resident computer nerd, I helped remove the site from both the screen and their history, and got them to the right site. Since then they’ve done a whole lot of computer shopping around Christmas, and in recent years have done their shopping almost exclusively through Amazon and other sites. Why am I telling you this? Because you don’t need to go out on Black Friday to get Black Friday deals.

  • Why Kickstarter is bad for Christmas Gifts

Don’t get me wrong. I love Kickstarter. I spend too much money there. I almost buy something everyday and have 2 projects I’m patiently awaiting the arrival of. But now that Christmas and the season of gift giving is upon us it’s important for people, especially first-time Kickstarter users, to know that the release dates are not always reliable. It’s nothing against the creators or the products. It comes down to something that people seem to forget: Kickstarter isn’t a store where you buy things. It’s a place where you show your support for projects and you get rewarded for that support.

  • The 2013 Gift Guide for Web People

Here’s a little secret: I love these lists. I love writing them, I love reading them, and I love buying stuff, so I love researching them. Plus, 2013 is a great year for web development and technology. Responsive Design is now in full swing as it’s pretty much standard practice to build a responsive site by default now. Great people like @wilto are pushing the standards fight forward for responsive images, there are great podcasts, and more. Shopping for web people shouldn’t be a difficult task, but I’d like to narrow it down for you. This list isn’t just going to be a list of books, or even a list of computer things. It’s going to be a list of stuff I like, and that I think other web people will also like.

  • Gifts for Web Developers / Geeks 2012

Thanksgiving and Black Friday officially kick off the Holiday, and subsequently the gift-giving, season. I often like to publish lists like this, that will help you shop for the web nerd (or just nerd) in your life, and 2012 is no different. With all kinds of new services, gadgets, and toys, 2012 is a great year to be a nerd! Here are some of my recommendations.

  • Links Round Up for 12/26/10

That’s all I have for today because I was pretty much checked out all week! I’ll hopefully have a post this week on something tech (Wrap up of 2010 or Predictions for 2011). Otherwise, have a great New Years and thanks for a great 2010!
