  • How to Get More Subscribers with QR Codes (QRTIGER Review)

    In-person conferences are coming BACK and I’m SO excited. One of my goals for conferences this year is to get more people to listen to my podcast. And while that can be an arduous task (“Yeah check out my podcast”), QRTIGER provides a good solution: create a QR code.

    We’ll create the code with a dynamic link that includes analytics, and add it to a business card – allowing conference attendees to subscribe right then and there!

  • How I’m Experimenting with Automation (Spring 2022)

    Back in the summer of 2018, I talked about how I was going to dedicate more time to automation. Since then, I’ve automated significant parts of my business, including guest outreach and booking, project creation, and even workspace configuration.

    Now that Shortcuts has reasonably good Mac support, and I have an Apple Silicon Mac, I’m re-evaluating my automation strategy and exploring what more I can do with these tools.

    Your email growth goals are way smaller than they should be. You can double or triple your subscriber list if you approach it professionally — with a plan in place for growth. The people who fail to grow their list treat it like a hobby. When it comes to content, start with who you’re writing for. Talk to people in your target audience and answer their questions. By the time you’re ready to launch the newsletter, you should know of at least 50 people who would sign up for it. When it comes to making money, high ticket items are your best bet. Your worst bet? Low-priced subscriptions. Louis says that memberships for creators are like a golden hampster wheel. Sure it’s recurring revenue, but there’s also the pressure of delivering each month.

  • Your Pricing Should Communicate Your Value

    The WordPress space is cheap! But that shouldn’t let you keep your prices down.

    Is that a fair assessment? Maybe I’m being too harsh, but anecdotally it’s true. I suffer from not charging enough, in part due to being in the WordPress space too long. And I know other freelancers who have the same feelings. But that’s why I’m grateful that I have good mentors in my life. And pricing what you’re worth – that’s what we’re going to talk about today.

    My website has been the thing that’s worked for me the most. It’s the one place that I know I can send people to and they’ll get everything they need. The transcripts are on there. I’ll tell you, this is the God’s honest truth. When I added transcripts to my podcast, I saw an increase in downloads. And for me, the thing that’s worked is showing up and answering the questions, right? Because then people share that. And I guess that more than anything is the thing that works for me.

  • How to Find the Right Tools for Creators (and Why an Open Platform is Better) with Jack Kitterhing

    Jack Kitterhing has been in the WordPress space for a while; you can say he deeply subscribes to the ethos that owning your own platform is one of the most important things a creator can do. That a SaaS, like Teachable, won’t be there for you like an owned platform, like WordPress + LearnDash, will. We have a good discussion about the merits of both. Is it really easier to set up a course on Teachable? What are the benefits of your own platform? We’ll get into all of that and more.

    Top Takeaways:

    Finding the right tool comes down to skill and comfort level. WordPress (and other open platforms) are cheaper. A SaaS will save you time. You also need to think about your users. What best serves their needs? Make a list of must have features and seek the best tool for that…but be a little forward thinking. Teachable, for example, doesn’t do memberships well. If you never want memberships, that’s great. If you do, Teachable might not be best. Spinning up your own WordPress site is a lot easier than it once was. The promise of Nexcess’ StoreBuilder and WP QuickStart products are the easy of signing up for a SaaS with the flexibility of WordPress.

    Niching downs forces you to learn an industry — which allows you to better serve them completely. That allows you to charge more Niching also means having a higher close rate.
