    Announcing 1085 & a Beginner’s WordPress Workshop

    When the weekly coding sessions were announced, I also alluded to courses, or workshops, that will be taking place at the Launch Pad in Downtown Scranton. I’m very excited  to announce the first one, as well as the venture behind it.

    First, the Workshop: This is one that’s been requested to me personally a few times so I wanted to make it happen as soon as I could. It’s called The Beginner’s Guide to WordPress and it will cover what WordPress is and how to use it, from adding posts to managing users and everything in between. The Workshop will be July 10th, from 6:30-8:30pm and will cost $20. For an extra $27, you can get access to 23 intro videos for WordPress, reinforcing what we talk about in the workshop.

    Next is the venture I’ve started to support these workshops, which is called 1085 (https://1085.co/). 1085 is a place for teaching and learning. It’s a place that organizes Workshops & sells Books, and there’s a lot more planned, all in downtown Scranton. You can read more here. Throughout the summer, there will be more workshops and resources added. I’m really excited for what’s in store, and you should be too!

    WordCamps, Summits, and Coding, Oh My!

    I’m hitting the final stretch of my speaking tour, with just 3 (maybe 4?)  WordPress events left for the summer before taking July off. I’m also giving a  TEDx talk in Scranton in August, but more information to come on that later. I won’t be off the grid though, as I have lots of great stuff planned in the Downtown Scranton area! More details and my speaking schedule after the jump.

    Now Powered by WP Engine!

    Feature-FastIf you’re reading this, it means you’re now seeing my site being hosted by WP Engine! It’s a move I’ve been meaning to make for a while now (especially since meeting all of you fantastic people at WordCamp Phoenix) and this weekend seemed like a good time to do it. So why did I move from Dreamhost and why did I choose WP Engine? Good questions!

    Announcing The Web Designer’s Guide to Google Glass (ebook)

    gg-coverOver the summer of 2013 I managed to get into the Google Glass Explorers program and got my hands on a set for myself. After using it for a while, especially spending time in the browser, I realized that this can (and likely will) change the way people will browser the web; Glass is only one of many pieces of wearable technology on the market and/or set to come out soon. With that in mind, I decided to write an article called The Web Designer’s Guide to Google Glass with the promise of an ebook coming out on the same topic. I’m happy to announce that book is finished and will be out in early March!

    Projects Roundup for February 7th.

    I’ve had quite a productive week as far as new work, releases, and new projects go and I’d like to share them here on the blog. A few weeks ago I made a decision to revamp the way I work, learn new things, and even adjusted my work schedule a bit to make me more productive. This is the first full week where things really came together and I think it’s shown!

    Why I Uninstalled Candy Crush Saga

    Look I’m not ashamed to admit it; I really enjoyed playing Candy Crush Saga. If you don’t know, it’s a puzzle game where you swap different pieces of candy to achieve certain goals and rack up points. It starts off a bit like Bejeweled and gets more complicated moving forward. It’s Bejeweled-like feel is why I liked it in the first place. I played a lot but tried not to bother friends outside the game with notifications. However, recently I read that King (the makers of Candy Crush Saga) trademarked the word ‘candy’. And worse? They are acting on it.

    Responsive Design with WordPress Giveaway

    rwdwp-coverAs you’ve probably read, my book, Responsive Design with WordPress, came out last month and is now available to purchase online and in stores. My publisher has also sent me a few copies to give to family, friends, important people, etc. I’ve decided that I’m going to give a few of those copies away through a couple of contests.

    They are both pretty basic and outlined here. The first one is through the website GoodReads. I’m giving away 3 copies and the contest runs until the 31st. All you have to do is enter here, assuming you have a GoodReads account.
