Wow! It’s been a while and I apologize. I’ve been keeping busy with Cognition Media (which is finally getting off the ground), but am back on track here. Today starts the first in a series of posts I’ll be writing to help with tech oriented gifts for the 2009 holiday season. Up first is a service I’ve been using for a while now (7-8 months) and am very happy with: lala.
As a freelancer, I don’t have an office, or employees, or all the extra stuff that one might have as a business. I work from home, with my laptop, my cell phone, and if I need to offload some work, I have a group of subcontractors I can call. This of course makes it harder to separate personal and professional life, especially if I’m giving people my cell phone number as a means of contact. That has changed with Google Voice.
Since the last time the Yankees went to the World Series in 2003 I’ve: Graduated college (MS and BS), started a company, grew my business, and much more. Since the last time they won in 2000 I’ve: graduated high school, started web design, started programming, started driving, and much much more.
This is the Yankees 4th trip to the Fall Classic this decade, and the 7th in my lifetime, winning 4 of them. Some people would said I’m spoiled; that I’m lucky my team has made and won it even once in my lifetime, something a lot of people I know probably can’t say, and definitely couldn’t say by the time they were 11. But I’m a Yankees fan and I thank God for that. I say that because I was born in NY, and my allegiance had to lie within the state. And it just so happens that my grandmother grew up a few blocks away from the stadium. Both my parents are Yankee fan and so am I.
Because of this, I expect more- not because I’m an asshole, but because of our history. With Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, Thurmon Munson, Reggie Jackson, Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and so many more, how can we not be the best? And this team is the best we’ve had since our record breaking 1998 team. I see a lot of parallels- the camaraderie, the veterans, the great young talent, the raw power, and the drive. It’s not a given that we will win every game, but we don’t count ourselves out and we know that we can win every game- especially now.
So to the Phillies (and their fans) I say bring it on. And to the Yankees and their fans: let’s finish this decade that same way we started it- with a championship.

This seems like a silly title, since GMail is an email client and all. I remember a time where PDAs and smart phones were a sign of status- you were either a business man or a tech geek. Now smartphones and internet enabled phones are as ubiquitous as the air we breath (you like that?). As someone who spends a lot of time on the mobile web (or the web in general), I thought I’d provide a list of some mobile sites that I find useful.
A few weeks ago my friend Mary came to me with an idea for a new website; one in the same breadth as FML and Texts from Last Night, but for “That’s What She Said” jokes. A couple weeks and some quick coding later and I we give you Best That’s What She Said!, a place where you can share your favorite “That’s What She Said” moments with the world. Aside from the utterly hilarious innuendo that will undoubtedly come from the site, it was a nice practice in JQuery coding for me.
Most of the home page uses JQuery to post and call the newest moments, and the voting also makes use of JQuery. I actually found it easy to use and modify. Since it’s really flashy Javascript, I’m glad it follows the tradition of Javascript in being able to Google most of what you need. That’s not to say it’s all written for you, but there is a nice base for you to start with. I’ll be sure to integrate more JQuery into future sites.

*Cross posted on Cognition Media’s Gears Blog. For those who don’t know, a few friends and I won some funding to start a company in Scranton, PA. The follow post is an update on our progress.
May was a big month for the Cognition Media team. We found out that we received funding to start this business and got put on the fast track to get the ball rolling. On top of that, all three of us were winding down with school and at the end of the month we all graduated. Now that we are officially done with school, it’s time to get down to business.
We are currently in the process of incorporating, which should take place within the next two weeks. In the mean time, we are launching the world’s first Minvera driven site. After a short training session Kristen and I are giving to our Alma mater, we are officially launching the new face of burkecatholic.org. More on that when it happens. Meanwhile, Matt and I have begun planning the cooler features of Minvera- the course management features. Development on all of that will begin early next week.
All-in-all the entire Cognition Media team is very excited to have this oppertunity and hope we can truely make a difference in helping high schools upgrade their technology to make them more efficient and well connected- both to the Internet and the community.
