Automatically Update Your Kit.com Links in WordPress

Kit.com is changing to Kit.co, and updating your WordPress blog links can be tedious. Here, you’ll learn how to use the Search and Replace plugin to do it automatically – potentially saving you hours of work. Make sure to make a backup first!

What are Kit.com Links?

Kit is a fantastic website that let’s you create collections of gear for you to share with your audience. It will automatically embed any affiliate links you have, and they don’t take a cut! They make money adding affiliate links, if you don’t have one.

How to Update Your Kit.com Links

The fastest way to update your Kit links is using a find and replace plugin that will make changes to the database. In the video, I showcase the Search and Replace plugin. Kit recommended Better Search Replace by Delicious Brains. Both are great.

BACK UP YOUR SITE

Before you do anything, take a backup of the database. Both of these plugins will let you do that within the plugin settings. Your server may also do it automatically.

Just make sure you have a backup of your database/site from before you make this change, just in-case something goes wrong.

Update Steps

Install either plugin and then go through these steps (all showcased in the video above):

  1. Go to the plugin settings page and do a Find for kit.com
  2. Fill in kit.co for the Replace field.
  3. Select the appropriate tables. In most cases this will be the wp_posts (or some other prefix – look for _posts)*
  4. Do a Dry Run to test. Read and verify
  5. Repeat, and uncheck “Dry Run.”

Caveats

Depending on how you’ve built your site, you may need to update more than just the posts table. In the video, I search all tables because I’m using other plugins that could have copied the Kit links.

If you have revisions turned on, you’ll likely see a lot more kit.com links than you expect. That’s OK! Just know the previous versions of your posts and pages will also get updated.

You might need to clear your cache in order to see the new links. This will be different depending on what caching plugin or host you’re using.

Make Sure to Test!

Once the change is made, and you’ve cleared your cache, make sure to test to make sure everything is working as expected.
