Get Ideas for Screen Free Fun at NoScreenTime.org

Last week I wrote about a challenge I’m doing where every day, I spend 2 hours away from all screens. The response to this challenge was overwhelmingly good so I decided to set up a new website to help people along. It’s called No Screen Time.

First, An Update

About 2 weeks in and I’m feeling really good about the challenge. I’m reading more, spending more time with friends, and my apartment has never been cleaner.

I find I’m doing a lot more tasks as I need to do them instead of putting them off to get back to some screen faster. The result is I don’t have a sink full of dishes, my laundry is not wrinkled, and there isn’t clutter everywhere. I think as far as Work/Life Balance goes, this is a huge positive since all of the work I do requires a screen.

Introducing NoScreenTime.Org

[bctt tweet=”NoScreenTime.Org offers suggested activities to do without a screen #2Hours0Screens”]

I built this as a way to help others get involved and participate in this challenge. I have some other small plans for it revolving around building a community, but for this most part this is a simple site – suggestions, and a reading list.

We are at the beginning of the month so now might be a good time to start! Also, for those who practice, this would be a great thing to do for Lent if you’re out of ideas.

No matter what, hopefully the site will be able to give you something constructive to do away from the computer.

[bctt tweet=”Use the hashtag #2Hours0Screens to get involved”]

Use the hashtag #2Hours0Screens to get involved. I’ll features good ones on the site.

Stop Focusing on WordPress Searches and Serve Your Customers

Over the last few months, we’ve seen several outlets report on the seemingly alarming decrease in search terms year-over-year in the WordPress space. But does it matter that the specific search terms are decreasing (sometimes marginally) even as WordPress and WooCommerce usage reach new heights. While well-meaning, I don’t think these reports solve the problem they think they’re solving.

In part one of this series, I talked about the importance of understanding your customer through a somewhat drawn-out example using baby clothes. But the point remains!  Today I want to tell you two other stories about my experience with prepared vs. unprepared people in different industries. You see, being prepared is the next step in understanding your customers. Knowing, and anticipating, their needs will help you get more clients.

    Favorites of 2013

It’s time for my annual Favorites of  the Year post. Much like 2012, 2013 was a great year. I saw a dream of mine come true by getting my second book, Responsive Design with WordPress, published by PeachPit/New Riders. They’ve published most of the books that I read to learn about web design/development, so it’s a real…

    Facebook vs. MySpace II

Note: This article was published while I was in my early 20s. I was much younger and dumber. Please don’t hold it against me. One of the perils of having a 20+ year old website! This is part 2 of a 3 part series that started here. Add-Ons Since joining Facebook and Myspace, both sites…

  • 2020: The Year of Depth

This year I’m continuing the trend I started last year of choosing a yearly theme over a bunch of New Year’s Resolutions. Where last year I focused on something very tangible – content – this year I’m choosing a “bigger picture theme. This year’s theme is the year of depth.
