wordcamp

  • This is the first weekend where I’m not traveling in a while. It’s also the only one where I’m not busy for a while – somehow even though I promise myself I’m going to take some time to relax, I manage to galavant.

Part of it is I like traveling and doing things in general. I spent last weekend at WordCamp Philly and had a blast. I’m going to NYC this week for a live recording of Stuff You Should Know.

This weekend was mine though. I did side work, cleaned up, and relaxed a bit. Recharged and ready for the summer.

  • It’s Official! WordCamp Scranton is July 18th!

I wrote this on the WordCamp Scranton blog originally. I am so excited to be organizing this event. The team and I are bound to make sure it’s a great event!

After a few months of initial planning and venue hunting, we are happy announce that WordCamp is coming to Scranton, PA on July 18th! It will be held at Johnson College and we could not be more excited!

    What is WordCamp?

WordCamp is a conference that focuses on everything WordPress.

WordCamps are informal, community-organized events that are put together by WordPress users like you. Everyone from casual users to core developers participate, share ideas, and get to know each other. (src).

We will have WordPress-focused talks, sponsors, networking events, swag, and an after party! It’s going to be a great weekend!

    We Need You!

Right now, we are getting all of our ducks in a row regarding this website and the important details, and we need your help! We are currently looking for people to fill three very important roles:

    • Sponsors: Sponsors will donate money or in-kind services to the event. We are working on a Sponsor slide deck now to get you the important details regarding audience and reach. Please get in touch if you’re interested! As an added bonus, WordCamps are run by the WordPress Foundation, a non-profit organization 🙂
    • Speakers: Interested in sharing what you know? We are looking for talks that range from beginner (how to set up a WordPress site) to advanced (You, Me, and the WordPress API make Three). If you’re interested, apply here.
    • Volunteers: Not sure about speaking or sponsoring, but still want to help out? No problem! We need volunteers to help get the word out as well as help run the event the day of. Sign up here!

If any of these interest you, get in touch. We will have official calls for all of these in the coming days but hey, the sooner the better, right?

    Thank You!

Thanks for reading! We are really excited to bring Scranton its first WordCamp. We hope you can make it to the event. Registration will be opening soon, but in the mean time, you can check the website or follow @WCScranton on Twitter.

  • WordCamps, Summits, and Coding, Oh My!

I’m hitting the final stretch of my speaking tour, with just 3 (maybe 4?)  WordPress events left for the summer before taking July off. I’m also giving a  TEDx talk in Scranton in August, but more information to come on that later. I won’t be off the grid though, as I have lots of great stuff planned in the Downtown Scranton area! More details and my speaking schedule after the jump.

  • Join Me for Speaking Events and my First Book Signing!

In the upcoming weeks, I’ll be wrapping up what has turned into a little speaking tour. This year I’ve already gone to Austin, Lancaster, did @shoptalkshow and held some events locally in Scranton/NEPA. Through June, I’ll be finishing strong, hitting several more WordCamps and I will have my book on sale and signing it!

  • My Slides from WordCamp Philly 2012

Here you go! The slides from my talk, “Building a Simple WordPress Framework” at @WordCampPhilly are available for download, as well as the framework I came up with. Thanks to everyone who came out!

If you have any questions or comments/please email me at joe [at] casabona [dot] org. A note on the framework, I recently made some changes that aren’t fully tested yet, but this is the version I’m running at casabonaorg-staging.eowgdit8-liquidwebsites.com/test/.

  • Speaking at WordCamp Philly

I'm Speaking - WordCamp PhillyJust a quick note that I’ll be speaking tomorrow (Oct 20th) at WordCamp Philly! My talk is called Building a Simple WordPress Framework. Here is the description:

This is a talk modeled after my 4-part series on WPTuts+, DIY WordPress Theme Framework. I’ll cover some basic rules of software reuse and defining your needs, what’s out there, why I made my own, and then some code: The important elements of WP themes and what should be included in the framework, how to use that framework as a child theme, and how to use it as a starting point for a parent theme.

I’m part of the Designer Track and will be speaking at 1:15pm (full schedule here). Come on by! If you can’t make it, I’ll be around both days so feel free to stop me and say hello.
