  • Quick Tip: Get a Family Cell Phone Plan to Save Money

I was talking to a friend yesterday who told me his parents booted him and his brother off their family plan and set them each up with their own, and how much more expensive it is. Let’s look at some numbers. I am on a family plan so I pay: $10 for my line + $10 for unlimited texting + $3.50 for visual voicemail (which I need to cancel) + $30 for the data plan. Thats $53.50. Assuming he is doing the minimum number of minutes, with text, and data (he’s getting the Droid 2), his plan looks like this: $60 for talk and text + $30 for data. That’s $90. Of-course, with Family Plan with his brother, his plan would look like this:

$100 for talk and text + $30(x2) for their data plans = $160 or $80/person. $10. Big Whoop. However, if you bump it up to the next plan for each person, it would be $110 vs $90. $20/month saved. Close to (essentially) a free data plan. If they add one more person to the plan, it would be $170/mo ($10 for the extra line), which divided by 3 is $56.60 per person. Plus, monthly charge savings tend to add up!

Seems like a no brainer at that rate. You will save a good amount of money by playing your cards right with a family plan.*

*note: These numbers are using Verizon Wireless’s plans. Results from other providers may vary.

  • Couchcast

My friend Nick and a couple of his friends set up a new podcast called Couchcast. From their About page:

“Couch-Cast” offers a unique look into the minds of studio executives, Academy-Award winning actors, and the minds behind some of Hollywood’s biggest successes and failures.
Or, at least it would, if we could get any of those people on the show. Strangely, none of them returned our phone calls. So, we’ll do the next best thing: make fun of them. Hardcore.

Check it out- it’s pretty funny and these guys know a lot about movies- so if you’re in to funny and movies, check it out!

  • My Interview at FreelanceFuse

Sam McArdle over at FreelanceFuse was nice enough to interview me about being a freelancer- primarily how I started the business and manage my web development projects. I really enjoyed doing the interview (even if he is a Redsox fan!) and appreciate his interest in my business and freelancing in general.

    From his site:

The FreelanceFuse mission is to create a resource for readers (and listeners) to understand where successful freelancers come from, where they are right now and where they are going in the future. The idea is to provide stories that are so powerful they inspire up and coming freelancers to quit procrastinating and start doing.

This is a mission I can get behind 100%. So head on over and check out my interview, along with the others there!

  • The Yankees and the World Series

    Celebration

Since the last time the Yankees went to the World Series in 2003 I’ve: Graduated college (MS and BS), started a company, grew my business, and much more. Since the last time they won in 2000 I’ve: graduated high school, started web design, started programming, started driving, and much much more.

This is the Yankees 4th trip to the Fall Classic this decade, and the 7th in my lifetime, winning 4 of them. Some people would said I’m spoiled; that I’m lucky my team has made and won it even once in my lifetime, something a lot of people I know probably can’t say, and definitely couldn’t say by the time they were 11. But I’m a Yankees fan and I thank God for that. I say that because I was born in NY, and my allegiance had to lie within the state. And it just so happens that my grandmother grew up a few blocks away from the stadium. Both my parents are Yankee fan and so am I.

Because of this, I expect more- not because I’m an asshole, but because of our history. With Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, Thurmon Munson, Reggie Jackson, Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and so many more, how can we not be the best? And this team is the best we’ve had since our record breaking 1998 team. I see a lot of parallels- the camaraderie, the veterans, the great young talent, the raw power, and the drive. It’s not a given that we will win every game, but we don’t count ourselves out and we know that we can win every game- especially now.

So to the Phillies (and their fans) I say bring it on. And to the Yankees and their fans: let’s finish this decade that same way we started it- with a championship.

  • Movies I need to see before I turn 24

In less than a month (23 days, actually), I will turn 24 years old. While I tout myself as being a pop culture nerd, there is a list of classic movies I still have not seen. A few weeks ago my friends and I set out to change that. Here is the list of movies I need to see before I turn 24, or at least very shortly after.
