My Travel Recording Setup (2025)
I was watching Friends last night (something I often do) and started thinking about the recording technology of the mid to late 90s. It occurred to me that my iPhone is more powerful than at least some of the cameras featured in the show. It also got me thinking that post-pandemic, travel recording has gotten so. much. easier.

Camera Setup
My primary camera will be my iPhone (it’s usually the latest Pro model). With 4K 60fps recording on both the back and front cameras, it’s easily the best camera I own. Plus, with continuity camera, I can use it as a webcam, or as a standalone camera.
Mic: DJI Mic Mini

This is a fantastic, affordable, tiny and versatile mic. The receiver plugs right into my phone or computer and the mic has great range. Highly recommend.
Tripod Setup
When I do use a tripod, it’s either:
I almost always use the ballhead and camera clip by Switchpod as well, but Elgato makes some great stuff too.
Podcasting Setup
I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least mention my travel recording setup for podcasting here:
- Handheld Mics: Rode Reporter and ATR2100. Both of these support XLR, and the ATR has USB as well. So if I’m recording a podcast, or want higher quality audio, these are my go to mics.
- Shotgun Mic: Audio-Technica AT8035
- Recorder: Zoom PodTrak P4. Zoom makes incredible recording equipment, and this reliable device accepts up to 4 mic inputs, records to an SD card, and can double as an audio interface.
- Tripod: Manfrotto Compact Light Aluminum 4-Section Tripod Kit
All of this gear goes in the Nomatic Travel Pack.
