WordCamp Scranton Followup

It’s been a little over a week since WordCamp Scranton, the dust as settled, and I have slept. First, I want to thank everyone who came out: attendees, speakers, sponsors, and volunteers. I also want to thank Johnson College for being such a great host. Finally, big thanks to Matt Mullenweg for taking time out of his busy schedule to come make the first WordCamp Scranton truly special.

The event was an incredible success. Phil and I, as well as everyone involved, put a ton of work into the event and I couldn’t be happier that it paid off. With the short timeline and a few other factors, I was worried for a while the event would be less than stellar. But a great news spot on WNEP and a lot of day-before registrations made sure that wasn’t the case by a long shot.

A few fun facts:

  • We were just 1 ticket short of selling out. 119 registrants! Thats 19 more than I the upper limit I originally estimated.
  • 42% of registrants were woman. As Matt pointed out, that’s a much better ratio than WordCamps of previous years.
  • The swag (a Fidel/conductorish hat) was a big success! I love mine.

All-in-all I think it was a really successful first event. Thanks again to everyone who came out. We’ll see you next year!

The first time I learned how to burn a CD was mind-blowing. It was 1999 and YouTube didn’t exist. Most of the web was brochure sites with marquees and hit counters, so there wasn’t a great place for learning how to do literally anything . Instead, my cousin came over and showed me. He brought…

Last night while reading a new book on my roof I witnessed smoke coming from a building several blocks away. “Something is definitely on fire.” I snapped a few photos and told some friends and family. One friend was on a scanner giving me updates while I also checked social media. All-in-all it was a…

Here’s a little secret: I love these lists. I love writing them, I love reading them, and I love buying stuff, so I love researching them. Plus, 2013 is a great year for web development and technology. Responsive Design is now in full swing as it’s pretty much standard practice to build a responsive site…

  • My First Automation Didn’t Feel Like a Big Deal

There are some events where we know the first time is a big deal. We know the first signed of the Declaration of Independence was John Hancock because the Second Continental Congress knew how important it was. WordCamp Scranton is coming together nicely after a bit of a rocky start. We have generous sponsors, a solid speaker lineup, amazing volunteers, and a pretty stellar announcement coming up. Planning this event is taking me back to college, being on USPB and all of the details involved in putting together a big event. Stressful…

The Best Ways to Troubleshoot Tech Issues

“It’s not working” is terrible feedback. It tells me nothing about what you were doing, what you were trying to do, and what the app didn’t do. It’s akin to looking at menu items without descriptions of the dishes. When you run into an issue and need to fill out a bug report or support…
