- Everything You Need to Know about the Verizon iPhone and Making the Switch (lifehacker): Great, comprehensive, and very informative.
- Would-Be Suicide Bomber Killed by Unexpected SMS from Mobile Carrier (wired): If true, the SMS might be the only time that a wireless carrier’s SMS message has ever been useful.
- How Egypt Turned Off the Internet (gizmodo): I was just speaking with my friend about how I appreciate that this would be nearly impossible to do in America.
- Android.Appstorm.Net (envato): The envato network just launched their latest site, dedicated to all things Android. Definitely check this out if you own an Android phone!

Manifest Development Redesign 2011: The Portfolio
For the second part of this series, I want to talk about putting my new portfolio together. The portfolio is the most important area for a web developer because it gives the user insight into the type of work he or she does, so I wanted to do it right. I started developing it in late November, and wanted to revamp the site completely from design to content. I got some feedback from my students during one class when we were talking about the importance of a small business’ website, and I wanted to integrate that, as well as some of the new things I learned over the last two years. I’m planning on making this a multipart series, and in today’s installment, I want to talk about the most important part of a website: The Homepage.

- Apple’s Making it Impossible to Open Up Your iPhone (gizmodo): They are swapping out screws and replacing them with ones that don’t have a commercial screw driver. Are you surprised? I’m not.

- Eek! A Male! (wsj): This is true. I’m actually self-conscious about being pinned as such, and it’s not healthy. On a side note, this is the second article from Lenore Skenazy I’m linking to from this week. I think I found a new favorite writer.
- ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Villains Revealed: Anne Hathaway as Catwoman and Tom Hardy as Bane. Sounds good to me.
- Larry Page to Replace Eric Schmidt as CEO of Google (mashable): Interesting news. Schmidt will still serve as Executive Chairman, but Page will take care of the day-to-day stuff.

- TV Show Favs is a TV Show Tracker for Android (lifehacker): This app keeps track of your favorite shows for you. And it has a widget. It’s my new favorite app.

- Assange Threatened to Sue of Leaked Cables (wired): As in, he was going to sue The Guardian if they published the story early. Of course he did.

- Android SMS fix is on the Way (bgr): Last week I posted a story about a pretty bad SMS bug in Android. Google says they’ve fixed it and are rolling it out to users.

- Tech Parents Tech (google): Google made a resource for the goto tech person in the family. It has video tutorials for some of the most common questions we’ll get from family members this holiday season. I love Google.
- On Speaking (simplebits): Dan Ceaderholm is one of my web design heros, and here he offers some great advice on speaking, which is definitely something I’d like to do if ever given the opportunity.
- Web Design by Gender: This info graphic explores the differences between male & female web designers. It’s pretty interesting. Check out the color graph for each gender.
- Behind the scenes of the 37signals Redesign (37signals): I love how clean and classy 37signals’ designs are- especially when it comes to their homepage. This is some great insight into the design decisions they make; it’s something every web designer should read.
- Editorial: RIM seems to be as lost as my Blackberry (engadget): Great article. Sums up my thoughts completely. It’s a shame that such a trailblazer has fallen so far behind in their own game.
- Word Lens (kottke): New augmented reality app for translating signs/text. Watch the video; be amazed.
Merry Christmas everyone! If you need some ideas for last minute gifts, check out my list of Tech Gifts for 2010. Also, I saw Tran-Siberian Orchestra last night. It was my fourth time seeing them; if you get the chance, you need to go. It’s an amazing show (musically & theatrically) and it will put you in the Christmas spirit!

- For this Business, Bad Publicity is a Good Thing (NYT): This guy is a d-bag, but it’s the pretty classic business model of “any publicity is good publicity.”
- Flickr Hack Makes 3D Model of any City in a Day: So using a computer & Flickr, you can now build Rome in a day.
- RIM sues Kik for Patent Infringement (engadget): The fact that Kik’s founder used to work for RIM doesn’t change my opinion that RIM is starting to realize BBM is the only thing keeping them relevant. It’s a shame they are going the way of Palm. Both paved the way for great technology and then couldn’t keep up.
- Will the Real 4G Please Stand Up?: 4G is defined as broadband speeds (100mpbs moving, 1gbps stationary). For point of reference, Verizon’s LTE network, while MUCH faster than 3G, is 12mbps at most.
- Facebook’s New Messages (appstorm): In case you missed it, web.appstorm published my article about Facebook’s New Messages app, which is currently being rolled out to users.
- Google Releases Chrome 8 (engadget): Â Lots of bug fixes, plus build-in PDF viewer. I’ve been wanting that for a while now.
- Yankees, Jeter Finalize Contract (mlb trade rumors): Thank God.
- Change 2 Settings to Speed Up Photoshop (lifehacker): Thank you, Lifehacker & makephotoshopfaster.com
- Google Reader get Native Android App (engadget): And it’s awesome. My favorite feature: scrolling through articles using the volume buttons.
- Are Stock Templates Good or Bad for Web Designers? (webdesigntuts+): It depends on the needs of the clients. Templates help me offer very affordable websites to those who just want to get online. You should communicate to your clients why they need a custom design vs. a template.

I didn’t spend too much time on the Internet this week, what with the holiday and all, but here’s what I got.
- Mashup Breakdown: A breakdown of all of the songs used on Girl Talk’s new album, All Day (which I highly recommend, by the way).
- But It Doesn’t Validate (nettuts+): A great article about why a site validating isn’t the end all be all of what makes a website good (and why it could actually hinder progress).
- News Corp & Apple to Release iPad only Newspaper: This will be very interesting to see. I’m expecting a killer user interface (UI) and easy ways to share stories and see supplemental content.
