  • Interesting Links for January 11, 2013

It’s not often I will do a links roundup, but as my Facebook and Twitter friends can attest to, I’ve been posting a lot this week. I’ve tried to hold back, but I will post the good ones here. Of-course, this will then get posted to Facebook and Twitter, but hey- better one than like 15, right?

  • Favorites of 2012

I’m going to be honest here. 2012 was a pretty great year for me. A lot of amazing things happened in both my personal and professional life; most publicly, I got my first book published, and I hope do the same in 2013. While I don’t have too many traditions on this blog (something I hope to change in 2013), my Favorites of the year post has been a pretty good staple.

  • Gifts for Web Developers / Geeks 2012

Thanksgiving and Black Friday officially kick off the Holiday, and subsequently the gift-giving, season. I often like to publish lists like this, that will help you shop for the web nerd (or just nerd) in your life, and 2012 is no different. With all kinds of new services, gadgets, and toys, 2012 is a great year to be a nerd! Here are some of my recommendations.

  • Articles from Pocket July 5th, 2012

Here are some of my favorite articles from my Pocket account. I’ll probably do this sporadically based on how much I’m reading/how interesting the Internet is being.

  • HTC Droid Incredible Initial Thoughts

    [singlepic id=1 w=320 h=240 float=center]

I’ve had the HTC Incredible for a week now and have used it pretty rigorously, testing the battery, speed, voice dialing, etc. Here are my initial thoughts on the device.

    The Good:

    • It’s very thin and light.
    • It’s super fast (compared to the Motorola Droid).
    • Great Camera. It’s also very fast.
    • Interface is very slick.
    • Flash Light App is really cool!
    • It was free from Best Buy.
    • Integrated Facebook, Twitter, & Flickr is cool. My contacts feel more complete.
    • Battery Life is fine.
    • Voice Search seems better on this device.
    • Keyboard is very easy to use in both landscape and portrait.

    The Not So Good:

    • There’s no unified Contacts app. Each of the 4 components (Call History, People, Groups, and Online Directories) are their own apps they you can navigate between.
    • There are a lot of preinstalled apps that I cannot delete.
    • It doesn’t use the official Facebook or Twitter apps.
    • I miss the Favorite Contacts area from the Droid.
    • (this is all android phones) I wish there were a way to hide apps in the apps drawer.

Overall, I’m very happy with the Incredible so far. It’s much faster than my old phone, the camera is much better with a faster shooting time, and everything feels very slick and cool. I can’t wait to get the dock for it!

  • Links Round Up for 12/19/10

    • Tech Parents Tech (google): Google made a resource for the goto tech person in the family. It has video tutorials for some of the most common questions we’ll get from family members this holiday season. I love Google.
    • On Speaking (simplebits): Dan Ceaderholm is one of my web design heros, and here he offers some great advice on speaking, which is definitely something I’d like to do if ever given the opportunity.
    • Web Design by Gender: This info graphic explores the differences between male & female web designers. It’s pretty interesting. Check out the color graph for each gender.
    • Behind the scenes of the 37signals Redesign (37signals): I love how clean and classy 37signals’ designs are- especially when it comes to their homepage. This is some great insight into the design decisions they make; it’s something every web designer should read.
    • Editorial: RIM seems to be as lost as my Blackberry (engadget): Great article. Sums up my thoughts completely. It’s a shame that such a trailblazer has fallen so far behind in their own game.
    • Word Lens (kottke): New augmented reality app for translating signs/text. Watch the video; be amazed.

Merry Christmas everyone! If you need some ideas for last minute gifts, check out my list of Tech Gifts for 2010. Also, I saw Tran-Siberian Orchestra last night. It was my fourth time seeing them; if you get the chance, you need to go. It’s an amazing show (musically & theatrically) and it will put you in the Christmas spirit!
