Interesting Links for January 11, 2013

It’s not often I will do a links roundup, but as my Facebook and Twitter friends can attest to, I’ve been posting a lot this week. I’ve tried to hold back, but I will post the good ones here. Of-course, this will then get posted to Facebook and Twitter, but hey- better one than like 15, right?

OKCupid tech will power match-ups between teachers and students on Tutor.com | The Verge: This is something that I really wish I thought of first. Using the same matching algorithm that powers OKCupid, Tutor.com will match tutors with those looking for some extra help in specific subject areas.

An iPhone Lover’s Confession: I Switched To the Nexus 4. Completely. | Gizmodo: As an avid Android user, I loved every minute of this article. I’m really glad people are finally starting to see the kind of power you can get from good Android devices. He does touch on a very good point: he’s a power user. He uses his phone a lot. Especially for users like that, Android is better.

Followers watch in horror as rapper Freddy E live-tweets his own suicide | The Verge: This is a sad story that I intend to talk about with my students next semester. It raises some interesting questions about how people deal with tragedy, and how people are using social media.

Teen survey says Apple is done, Surface is cool | BGR: It’s really interesting to see tech trends among teenagers. I read another story a few weeks ago about how they view certain social media, favoring Instagram over Facebook. According to this survey, Apple is “too popular to be popular,” and the Surface and Nexus devices are viewed more favorably.

Target will now price-match Amazon, other retailers year-round | The Verge: This is an interesting move for the brick-and-mortar outfit, as Amazon can generally offer lower prices because they don’t have stores to maintain. I’m definitely going to try this out; going into a store, showing them a lower price on my phone and paying that price will be pretty cool to me. I hope it works out for them!

Post Inject Code Tactus morphing touchscreen – Videos | Viddler: Guys. This is a screen that morphs based on the app you’re using. If they keyboard is on, then keyboard buttons will morph on the screen. Crazy.

  • MemberPress and Asking: Is the WordPress Way the Right Way?

MemberPress made some waves this week when it was discovered that they were completely locking out users who had expired license keys. The WordPress way is you get access to the plugin, which you get to keep because it’s open source, whether or not you keep paying for the license. Generally, support and updates are the things that you keep paying for. But why is this the case when virtually every other piece of software we use today is based on, “a keep paying for access” model?

    We Create Our Own Friction

I’m working on a new and improved Substack experiment – I’m consistently being called back to that platform and think it could be a good secondary way to build an audience.  I started thinking about what I could name it, and was asking a friend what they thought about a new name. This was their…

  • Podcast Advent 2024 is Underway!

For years, I thought about doing a “Podcast Advent,” similar to what 24ways.org did for web development until it sadly stopped in 2019. Last year, I finally took action on November 27th, registering the domain, and coming up with a plan for me to create 24 pieces of content in 24 days. It worked out…
