• The Stretch…

With the end of the semester quickly approaching, I am really looking forward to a summer vacation- my last one at that. This semester has been hell and the culmination of all my work starts to come together with one of two major events I planned this semester. Not to mention two papers due Monday, two tests in the next two days, meetings, clients, and of course, the unforeseen stuff. At this moment I am still unemployed for the summer, but honestly, for the first 2 weeks at least, that might not be such a bad thing. Still I know I should do some applications next week, when I will have some time to myself, in the midst of 100 things ending and 100 more beginning.

I write this because I need to vent, but also because of the post I just read over at Waiter Rant. I take solace in the fact that I am not the only one feeling small, anxious and burnt out. I hope the waiter enjoys those days off. I know that my busy schedule will calm down once the summer comes, even if I am working a full time job. Anyway, posts will be (and have been) sparse, and I apologize for that. But once school is done, this should pick up again. Later!

    Then and Now

I like to read old posts from time to time, just to see what I was up to. I’ve noticed a few things about my posts as I read closer and closer to the present. First is my spelling/grammar. A year and or so ago, my spelling and grammar were atrocious. I never spell checked or proofread. Now I do so every post. Since this is my third year writing like this, my spelling, grammar and vocab have also gotten much better. Next is length of the post. Then, I was writing because I felt like I had to. Some stuff that is not in these archives (my one-level-above-LJ) was just a few sentences on my day; nothing worth reading. Now, I try to give a good size post and cover everything I want to talk about. Last is the subject matter. I now have a better idea of what people want to read about. Granted, this is my site, but no one cares about what I had for lunch today, or that I spoke to the girl I like. I try to keep it interesting.

So I guess I am writing this to apologize to those who read older posts. They are poorly written, there are type-os galore, and I curse too much in them. But, try to see past that to what I am really saying 😉 Later!

  • One Image to rule them all

Or 2. Checking out my stats today I saw a lot of links I didn’t recognize, primarily My Space profiles. One site I found was hot linking an image for the cover of the fight club book. So I changed it to a nice Public Service Announcment. I did the same with the Yankees-Boston image from this post, which was also being hot linked.

Finding it strange that only those two images were used, I did a google image search on those two, and it turns out they are the number ones. Below are the images I replaced on the multitude of sites used in the hot links. Later!

  • Trials and Tribulations

The site was down last night, and is now fixed. It broke for no reason,
somehow the permissions got changed, and my server admin fixed it. Then
there was some kind of error on the site about an array, but I’m assuming
that is because I reinstalled WordPress and it did not complete, due to
‘lack of permissions’. I noticed it when I tried to post about hot linking,
and the number of sites I found that were hotlinking to me. I will post it
later on when I am at home.

As of right now, however, the site is fixed, and I apologize for any
    inconvenience. Later!

    Version 4.0

The New TehJoey is officially launched. You may have been noticing over the last few days, when layouts were switching back and forth. But this is more than just a layout change, which is what my last one and the one before that really was.

For this I decided on something different. Recently I came to the conclusion that my programming skills are stronger than my design skills. I like the programming aspect better- functionality, performing certain tasks, etc. So that what I focused on here. The layout is simple, but I feel it is good. It’s clean and easy to read. However, the focus is on some new features. I am now coming close to 300 posts. With the way my category and archiving system is set up, finding stuff isn’t easy. So, taking a page from Del.icio.us, Flickr, and Binary Bonsai, I am going with ‘tags’ instead of categories. Really, they are kinda the same. But with tags, I can add more to each post, make it easier for users to find something by topic. I am currently going through my posts, adding more tags to each post.

Secondly, after being allowed to post comments on LifeHacker, I found I REALLY REALLY like they way their comments were handled. Between them, and Mike Industries with the comment preview, I came to the conclusion I wanted that too. So with some AJAXness, I did. Maybe I will fill you in on how i did it at a later date.

I will more than likely post again on the new layout. For now, if you have a suggestion or find a bug, you can report it on the About Page. Later!

  • Updates!

So I haven’t updated in ’06 yet. The reason is this: I have been working almost none stop on probably the best web app. I have ever written. It is one that uploads and adds pictures to a database and deletes pictures from a database. To be honest, I did not think it would be as hard as it was. i clearly left some stuff out of my initial planning though.

So I just thought I’d keep you up to date! Soon I will add a “currently reading” section to the side bar, and maybe a currently watching. But honestly, I don’t want to look at any code for at least 24 hours. Later!

The user log in was fairly easy to write- and I will probably be releasing that code (in a pseudo-new section for 2006). And even the photo stuff wasn’t too bad (i will also be releasing code). It was the stuff I didn’t really think of. For instance, I can’t navigate through the pictures by ID, because if a pic gets deleted, so does that ID, and they are auto number. So I had to write a short (lines wise, not time wise) function that check for the next row’s id and then printed the nav buttons. Also, resizing pictures. Once I realized what the hell i was doing, it wasn’t hard. But I will go through that once it is public.

O Yeah!– I recently upgraded to Word Press 2.0. So, if some of the pages are broken, that’s why. I will fix them ASAP.

  • Redecorating

I’ve decided to do some redecorating around here. Of course, right now I have nothing to do, and I stuck in a lab, so now it’s ok. But we will see how I feel about it tomorrow when finals start….
    Later!

  • Hits!

    HITS!

I don’t normally report on hits and what-not, but tonight I will make an exception. As you can see by the chart, for the month of October, I brought in 728 unique visitors and close to 8000 hits. Now I know that some of this might be spam referrals, but checking out my referral links, it’s a very low number.

The reason i am reporting these numbers is because these numbers are the best I have ever had- in every category, except hits and pages in May. And I have a feeling spam had a lot to do with that. But, I am very happy with the growth of this blog/website. Thanks to everyone who keeps reading, and feel free to comment! Later

    Nothing good to say

I try not to make this a personal blog. Soon enough I will be blogging about my CS 2 adventures- Level 2 programming in Java. Until then, I really don’t have much to talk about. Project wise, I just got O’Reilly’s PHP Cookbook, so I will be doing some work out of there, on the little free time I have. I am also Evaluating software call “Hot Potatoes” for work, but that will probably be of little or no interest to anyone, unless you work for an educational institution. I apologize that I have nothing better to say, at least not for now, but with school and everything, I’ve been busy, and life’s been kind of uneventful. Later

I’ve decided to launch the new design, even though the pages arent all working. I will keep you posted on that, as well as a better descripiton of the site and what i did. Later!
