Happy Birthday, WordPress

 wplogo

I know this is about a day late, but I want to wish WordPress a happy birthday. You see, I wouldn’t be where I am today without it. In college I spoke with my friend @smekosh about creating my own CMS as I was writing a few for clients, and he pointed me towards WordPress. That was in 2004; since then so much has happened (listed after the jump), and for that I need to say Thank You, from the bottom of my heart.

I’m not going to make this long- it’s just a list of things that have happened to me because of WordPress, for which I am thankful.

  • Being the first to teach me “separation of concerns.”
  • My senior project in college.
  • Allowing me to build a freelance career.
  • Allowing me to build a company (no matter how short lived) using the platform.
  • Making me an expert in something.
  • My first book.
  • My first professional speaking event.
  • So many things I am working on right now that are very, very exciting, and yet to be announced.

Perhaps WordPress didn’t help me discover my passion, but it certainly did help it flourish, making me who I am today.

  • You Must Value Your Time

“Why would you pay someone when you can do it yourself?” People have said that to me about hiring: As well as as: Yet, all of these businesses exist — and it’s not because their clients are exclusively people who can’t do it themselves. It’s because their clients, like myself, value their time. And you…

Every year I publish my list of resolutions as well as a scorecard from the previous year. For 2015, I’ve redesign the site (well, I used HTML5 Boilerplate) and broke my resolutions down into 2 categories: “Do More” and “Do Less.”
