  • Yankees vs. RedSox

    Yanks vs. Sox

    The Yankees play the Red Sox this weekend in a 3 game series to end the season, possibly permenantly for one of the teams. As the standings read now, Yanks are one game up on the BoSox, who are tied for the wild card with Cleavland. Wang, Johnson and Moose vs. Wells, Wakefield and Schilling. I’m worried about sunday’s game to say the least, as Moose has been subpar. But so has Schilling. Really, both teams have kind of weak pitching. This series should be a slugfest hopefully ending in the Yanks taking the series.

    As for Cleavland, they are playing the White Sox, who clinched AL Central yesterday. That means they are in no matter what. If the Indians sweep the ChiSox, the loser of the Yanks-BoSox is going home, soiled and shamed. It will be a very interesting and nerve-wrecking weekend. Let’s hope the yanks come out on top! Later.

    A new Featured Project. Bill Conroy is running in my district for Supreme Court Justice (of my district). He came to me asking for a site design for what he had already laid out page wise. After looking at some politicians’ websites, I noticed that a lot of these sites were simple, but not bad looking- they had a good balance of images and text. So I decided I would shoot for that too (considering that’s what I normally do). It was a little difficult to add a good mix of images, however, because he does not have photos from public events. That might change, and I would be glad to add them where I can, but back to the design.
    For the banner, I went with a serif text to give kind of the elegant look that said ‘Supreme Court’. To drive that home even further, I added Lady Justice. The other main component of the banner is a map of the counties he will represent. I felt that not only did it look good, but it was also informative. The client also wanted the American Flag, which I added in the background at an opacity of 75%.
    Getting to the layout, I wanted something, as I mentioned before, simple and informative. The information was not a problem, as all of it was provided to me. I decided to go with a left side navigation in a Georgia font keeping with a serif theme for something elegant. On the right I added a header to each page- and to make it better the image is just a background with a hidden header. I did this for 2 reasons. If someone has CSS disabled, they will not see an image block, they will see an actual header. Also, this is for Search Engine Optimization. Google does searching based on headers. So adding hidden headers allows me to add the design I want, but still makes the site come up in a google search. I also used only divs- no tables, all divs. Tables are slowly being phased out of web design, so I’m trying to employ new ways of organizing data. With CSS it’s very easy too.
    After doing that, I did my normal design routines. PHP template, ul for navigation, verdana font for easy readability, etc. I’m glad to say the client is very happy with the site, as am I. Visit the Site

  • Coding

    This semester I am taking CompSci II, an advanced Java programming course at my school. So I figured I might as well live up to the name of my blog and talk about it. I am not planning on talking about CS I stuff- that is, basic programming- ifs, whiles, fors etc. unless I am asked. I’d also like you to keep in mind that I am still learning the CS II stuff, so if you see something that’s wrong or it doesn’t seem like I fully understand it, feel free to correct me in the comments.
    It’s tough to kinda find a starting point for this- so I guess I can go by class. Tonight we did error handling and exceptions. There are 3 types of errors- syntax, logic, and run time. Exception handling is for run time errors, which, if the program is not coded correctly, will make the program crash. This takes away from the robustness of the program, where robustness is the property of reacting “gracefully” (as opposed to “crashing”) when abnormal conditions.
    To prevent crashes, making the program more robust, we add exception handling in the form of a try/catch statement. a try/catch statement is set up like this:

    try{
    -code with possible bugs/errors/exceptions-
    }
    catch(excetionType1 name){
    -how you want to handle the error-
    }
    catch(excetionType2 name){
    -how you want to handle the error-
    }
    finally{
    -statements executed after try and catch sections-
    }

    The way this is set up, you put code in the try section. If at any time in that code an error occurs (stated in Java as “An exception is thrown”) it will check the catch statements looking for that exception to see how to handle it. Usually, (in my experiences) the exception is simply handled with a print statement stating the error. In the future, I’m sure we will look into how to use exception handling not only to state the error, but also allow the program to keep going, or revert back to before the error. The finally statement will be executed whether or not an exception is thrown.
    You can find a list of Java Exceptions here. Once my professor posts his notes on exception handling, I will post them here. Later

    Update: Here is that link like I promised.

  • Music and Nostalgia

    I know we have all experienced this phenomena at least once in our lives. You listen to a CD that you haven’t listened to in a long time, maybe years, and when you hear those songs, it brings you back to maybe the last time you heard it, or around that time. It has happened to me a few times, but not as strongly as right now with the CD “War All the Time” by Thursday. I got it December of 2003, my freshman year of college. Whenever I listen to the song Asleep in the Chapel especially, it brings me back to then. I can see it perfectly- sitting in my dorm room, Martin Hall, at my computer, playing Call of Duty, which was all the rage my freshman year because of our awesome network at school. The scene out my window was a wintry freshman lower quad, everything covered with snow. The same scene that was on my computer- a snow storm to brave in search of the other army. I think the reason that this CD brings back such a vivid memory of that is because of the strong relationships everything I just described had. The CD has a white cover and is entitled “War All the Time.” The scene the CD paints is a broken down city that is war tired and now deserted. The game, Call of Duty, is a war game that would take place in the deserted cities described in the CD. It was very fitting that I listened to this CD while playing the game. Another one of our favorite levels was a Russian level that was very snowy- that coupled with the snowy atmosphere outside my window created a very convincing setting to play this game in. Listening to this CD makes me kind of want to be back there- a setting so unique that I know it will never be repeated.
    Thanks for indulging me for a bit- feel free to leave comments. Later.

  • Football

    Tom Brady
    Tom Brady

    Well the football season is now well under way, and I’ve got to say, I was quite happy with Week 1. The huge news is that The Giants won 42-19 vs. Az. I did miss most of the first half, but the secord half is what mattered. Eli has 2 TD passes, Tiki had one, and 2 came from a punt return and a kick return. If thier season stays like this, I will be a very happy person. Also, The Eagles lost, as McNabb played less than stellar. I don’t mind this week, or any week where it will not matter, but TO, Westbrook and LJ Smith are on my Fantasy Team, and I’d like them to do well when I need them too.
    This was the other reason I was very happy. I knew I would beat the team I played this week and he made subpar picks durring the draft, but I placed 4th in overall scoring for the week, just 3 points shy of 3rd. (maybe if TO could wrap is hands around the ball, I would have placed 3rd). This is huge for me because the last 2 years my seasons/teams were not very good. But I made a vow that would change this year, and it’s good to see I’m off to a good start. Tom Brady is pictured because he was the high scorer on my team with 24.14. Sort of to my dismay, I did not have RB Larry Johnson of the Cheifs playing, and he scored 24.10. But, who would think he would so so well when the other RB on the team is Preist Holmes? Later!

  • Bloc Party!

    Bloc Party

    The Bloc Party concert in Philly this past weekend was absolutly amazing. After the opening acts, [insert name] was weird and excentric, but got better towards the end. They had one song, Monte Cristo that was really good. I’m sorry I don’t know the name of the band. The Kills came on after that, and I liked them. The girl, though she did kinda look like the chick from The Ring, was totally hot. But then it was time for the main event.
    Bloc Party came on at 10, and went crazy. They are great performers. The light show was great, and the crowd was pretty cool. I didn’t really expect any ‘moshing’ or jumping around, and there was a lot. Everyone just went nuts for Banquet and Helicopter. They played until about 11, and then came out for 2 encores, and ended on The Answer, which was great. I also really enjoyed their performance of Pioneers which is a song I love. If you have never heard of Bloc Party, you can check them out here. Later!

  • Nothing good to say

    I try not to make this a personal blog. Soon enough I will be blogging about my CS 2 adventures- Level 2 programming in Java. Until then, I really don’t have much to talk about. Project wise, I just got O’Reilly’s PHP Cookbook, so I will be doing some work out of there, on the little free time I have. I am also Evaluating software call “Hot Potatoes” for work, but that will probably be of little or no interest to anyone, unless you work for an educational institution. I apologize that I have nothing better to say, at least not for now, but with school and everything, I’ve been busy, and life’s been kind of uneventful. Later
