    Getting Things Done

    Lately there’s been a lot of talk of Getting Things Done, or GTD. Lifehacker recently asked the readers about the five best GTD apps. My feed reader has also featured numerous articles on the topic of GTD; so in traditional blogging fashion I thought I’d weigh in. My best GTD ‘app’ is Google.

    Really it’s broken down into three different, nicely integrated parts with Google as the main player. Google, Firefox, and Remember the Milk make my life significantly easier. With GCal, GMail, Google Notebook, and Remember the Milk I don’t need a desktop application. And each app is accessible from within the others. Remember the Milk even has a Firefox extension that integrates it with GMail so you can not only view or edit your tasks, but add an email right to your tasks list. And of course, we can’t forget Google Gears.

    Gears allows me to access sites like Remember the Milk, Google Reader, and Google Docs even when I don’t have an internet connection. If/when they integrate Google Calendar, it will be perfect; I won’t need a desktop calendar program (sidebar- GCal also autosyncs with my Blackberry, so I don’t need to connect it to my computer either).

    All in all, Google has made my life easier and is quickly replacing the desktop applications I use. I’ve even been considering using Google Docs instead of MS Office, but that probably isn’t likely- though I am using it more frequently.

    Recently I downloaded Firefox 2 RC2. While I have not examined it too closely, there are two very cool features that make it worth downloading. The first one is simply Google Suggest built right into the search. It’s a pretty neat feature, especially because before getting Firefox, Google Suggest was my search of choice. Since getting Firefox, I have used the easy to access search bar that is top right. The next feature, however, makes RC2 worthwhile.

    In this latest build of Firefox, an auto spell check for text boxes has been added. That means any text box you type into is automatically spell checked by Firefox. Before this, I have had to copy and paste anything into a website I used called SpellCheck.net. It is not a pretty site, but it gets the job done. Now, however, I have one less step I need to complete. AND just like in Word, you can Add to Dictionary. Later!

    Use your browser when ports are blocked.

    Since being back on campus, I have been doing a lot of my work on the school’s LAN and WiFi networks, as well as their computers. While usually I can get my work done without problems, sometimes I run into blocked ports or computers I cannot download. To fix the problem, I have been doing things like FTPing and IMing via the broswer, on some very powerful web apps. Here are a couple of resources I have been using.

    Meebo

    Meebo is a great web app that allows for IMing on a number of different clients including AIM, Yahoo, Jabber and MSN. Once logged in you have your buddy list and moveable IM windows, as if you were working on the desktop within your browser. You can view profiles, set away messages, etc. MUCH better than AIM express.

    The second website I have been using while on campus is an FTP Client called FTP Live. It’s a little slow and as far as I know you can’t upload multiple files. But when you need something in the clinch, It’s a good site to use.

    PC Starter Kit

    Let me start by saying I suck for not bring my PC charger home over break. No worries though, I have a back up PC with none of my files and stuff on it. But it is enough to get by. Unfortunately, this is a bare bones PC with none of my regular software on it. I have to rely on freeware, both new and old. So, here is a list of the software I am using to get by. Eventually I want to make all the installs part of a .bat file so I can run that one script and everything I need will be installed!

    Firefox
    First and foremost, I need a good browser to get all my other stuff. Firefox, without question.
    Gaim
    For all of my Instant Messaging needs
    Notepad++
    In my opinion, the best text editor. Supports many languages and it’s very lightweight.
    FileZilla
    I will always be doing FTP/Web Stuff, and for that, I have FileZilla.
    The GIMP
    For my photo editing needs
    Open Office
    When I don’t have MS Office handy, this is the next best thing
    Fox It PDF Reader
    I know Adobe Reader is free too, but Fox It reader is 100x better.

    And there you have it. My quick and dirty list of stuff I constantly use, no matter what PC I am on. You can find a huge list of freeware here too. Later!

    IE Tab for FireFox

    In the midst of finals, packing, and the butt load of other stuff I have to do this week, I figured I’d take some time real quick to mention a FF extension that I have been loving. IE Tab is an extension that allows you to right click on a page and open an IE tab right in FF. This is just great for site development and for those sites that don’t support FF (but that is another story). I find it to be a great and convenient tool that allows you to have the processing of IE with the safety of Fire Fox. Later!

    Get FireFox


    FireFox is the better browser. It offers a number of features that you don’t get with Internet Explorer, including tabbed browser for a more organized browsing expirience, built-in spyware and ad blocking, etc. But the best part is that you can get extentions and plug-ins galore. Since FireFox is an open source browser, people everywhere are writting things for the browser that they think people would like. My favorite by far is the Ad-Block plug-in, which allows you to block all ads on any page you would like. There is one to integrate your music player (including iTunes) into it, get weather, etc. It’s a great browser that everone should be using. Later!

    Fire Fox Review.

    Finals Are over and well, i couldnt be more happy. Now, I need to find a job. Preferably well paying. Anyway, alot has gone on in the past week, so im reporting.
    Fire Fox 1.0– I have been hearing great things about this browser, and last night my friend showed me what he did with his. After that I was convinced to at least try it out. In 10 min, i was convinced that this is the best fucking browser. First of all, its Open Source. That means when someone wants the browser to do something, the write a code for it, or tell someone too. This means there is a load of extentions to download. Some of the ones I got are:
    – FoxyTunes- control of your music player from within fire fox. -Web Developer- A bunch of tools for, you guessed it, the web developer. Its a tool bar that allowes you to change the CSS of the page, or apply your own, validate the CSS, HTML, Links, and other things on any page, display certain attributes about images, such as dimmentions and alt tags, and resize the window resolution. -ForcastFox- weather, from anywhere, in the bottom of your browser. -Mouse Guesters- The all important right click. Right click and move your mouse a certain way, and u can go back, formward, new window, open a certain link, or anything else you can do with a broswer. -AdBlock- th ebest thing ever. Not only does it block pop ups, but u can chose to have it blocks ads with in pages. That means all those annoying ads on tripod sites, geocities sites, and even google ads, can be blocked. It will do wonders for ESPN’s Site, as that site is full of ads. if I have time later, ill get up a screen shot.
    There are also customizable skins, add ons like google search, a bookmarks nav bar, tabbed browsing, and a bunch of other fun stuff. If you don’t have it, you definetly should. Later!
