Manage Email Correspondence with GMail

Note: This article was published while I was in my early 20s. I was much younger and dumber. Please don't hold it against me. One of the perils of having a 20+ year old website!

GMailThis seems like a silly title, since GMail is an email client and all. However, wouldn’t it be nice if you could have all of the conversations you’ve with with the same person in one place, at the click of a button? As it turns out GMail’s search and a labs function called Quick Links makes that very easy to do.

In your GMail account, the first thing you need to do is enable Quick Links from the labs tab. Click the beaker icon in the top right corner:

labs-barOnce on the page, about 1/4 of the way down, you’ll see the box for Quick Links. Enable that and click, ‘Save Changes’ at the bottom.

Now back in your inbox, we are going to create a search page to save. In the search box at the top, type from:you@email.com and replace “you@email.com” with someone’s email address. Once the page loads, Click “Add Quick Link” in the Quick Links box and give it a meaningful title. Click OK and you’re done! Now you have a quick reference for any email sent from that specific email address.

For more complicated ones (for example, someone who uses 2 email address), you can reference GMail’s advanced search page. Quick Links works for any search.
