Links Round Up for 7/18/10

Note: This article was published while I was in my early 20s. I was much younger and dumber. Please don't hold it against me. One of the perils of having a 20+ year old website!

I don’t really do link round ups all that often, but I’ve resolved to do them more often (I’m going to try for once a week, but don’t hold me to it). I post a lot of links throughout the week so I figured I’d post the best ones on Sundays. First(ish) one- here goes!

  • Students that Freelance: A blog targeting students interested in freelancing that was started by Amber Turner, a friend I met over at Freelance Switch. She’s started a blog I’ve wanted to start for a while and she’s doing a great job! If you fit the bill for either student or freelancer (or both!) definitely head over that and see what she has to say.
  • Fighting with Teens: a Copy Right Story: Songwriter Jason Robert Brown posts an argument he had with a teenager over why you’re not supposed to distribute other people’s work for free without permission. Ah, I remember when I was a teenager and knew everything.
  • Ask FreelanceSwitch #15: The good people over at FreelanceSwitch tell us about write-offs and alternatives to cold calls- my most and least favorite things about freelancing, respectively (OK, they aren’t my most favorite, but write-offs are nice)!
  • Star Wars Subway Car (video): The opening scene of Star Wars: A New Hope reenacted on a subway car by an improv group. This deeply appeals to my nerdy side.
  • What Is The Last Thing You Do Before You Launch A Website?: I freak out. This gives you the benefits and implications of some of the more common prelaunch rituals.
  • Apple’s iPhone 4 Antenna Press Conference: Jobs comments on what he dubs “Antennagate” (how clever). My thoughts are posted here.
  • RIM’s Reaction to iPhone Antenna Conference: I found this statement to be considerably better than the press conference held by Apple. Fanboys be damned.

  • New Course: Using Gravity Forms

I have a new course available in the LinkedIn Learning library, all about how to use my favorite form builder, Gravity Forms!

Did you know that you can use Gravity Forms in WordPress as more than just a form builder? Gravity Forms is one of the most popular form builders on the market, but its full functionality for developers is sometimes underappreciated.

  • I was on WP Tavern’s Jukebox

Nathan Wrigley invited me on Jukebox by WP Tavern and it was a real treat. We got to talk all about podcasting, and then how WordPress fits into launching a running a podcast. Here’s my favorite bit from the interview:

It goes back to that first question you asked me…why shouldn’t somebody start a podcast? If you’re just doing it for the money and the glory, you’re in for a long, frustrating ride. But if you’re doing it because you want to tell the world about this thing that you’re super passionate about, then yeah, it’s a grind, but it’s a grind where you get to talk about this thing that you love. And that is what’s going to make an audience connect with you, and that is what’s going to get your podcast to grow.

Check out the whole interview here.
