    Links Round Up for 11/28/10

    November 28, 2010

I didn’t spend too much time on the Internet this week, what with the holiday and all, but here’s what I got.

    • Mashup Breakdown: A breakdown of all of the songs used on Girl Talk’s new album, All Day (which I highly recommend, by the way).
    • But It Doesn’t Validate (nettuts+): A great article about why a site validating isn’t the end all be all of what makes a website good (and why it could actually hinder progress).
    • News Corp & Apple to Release iPad only Newspaper: This will be very interesting to see. I’m expecting a killer user interface (UI) and easy ways to share stories and see supplemental content.

    Great Tech Gifts 2010

    November 26, 2010

This is something I’ve wanted to become more consistent with, as I usually post these lists sporadically and at poor times. I figure Black Friday is a good day to settle on this type of post, since it is the official start of Holiday Shopping.

Amazon Kindle: This is number one on my list of recommendations. E-Readers have been around for a few years now and I think the Kindle has proven king. It’s a great way to read books (it’s a lot like reading a real book), it’s easy on the eyes, and with apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, you can keep your books with you and synced at all times. Plus, they are also offering a very affordable Wifi Only version. I truly love mine, which I got last Christmas. ($189 for 3G + Wifi, $139 for Wifi only)

USA Today, WSJ, and NYT iPad Apps

    November 5, 2010

Earlier in the week I said the iPad is best for consuming information, so it only makes sense that I’d mention the top three news apps for it: USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and NY Times. I haven’t used all of  them extensively though I did want to compare some of the basic features of each. I’ll cover: how intuitive the apps are to use, how much content they make available, and how well they integrate the ability to share stores on Facebook & Twitter.

    My Review on the iPad

    November 3, 2010

A couple of weeks ago I picked up the 16GB 3G iPad as sort of a birthday gift from me to me. It’s something I’ve been contemplating for a while and finally pulled the trigged. I promised quite a few people a review on the device now that I own it and while I didn’t do rigorous testing, I used it in the most common testing environments- my house, other offices, the train, meetings, and using it for travel instead of my laptop. You can see my thoughts after the jump.

    Links Round Up for 10/31/10

    October 31, 2010
    • Super-Toys Last all Summer Long: Fun that he wrote this 2 days after I bought mine. He’s dead on about sharing though. There needs to be an easier way. Full review from me coming soon.
    • Bypass Facebook Fan Pages: Can we all stop liking those stupid pages now?
    • Nordstrom’s Employee Handbook- short and sweet: If I ever have a full on company, my employee handbook will be similar. I hate stupid, pointless rules.
    • 6 Secret Monopolies You Didn’t Know Run the World: I know I started on the 2nd page, but #3 is the most important one (for all of you fanboys out there).
    • Nation Disappointed by Great World Series Matchup: Incredibly true. Anyone who’s said this is a bad World Series is clearly only a Yankees or Phillies fan, not a baseball fan. [note: I’m a Yankees fan, but I love good baseball.]
    • Ron Howard Explains Keeping “Gay” Joke in The Dilemma: There are so many other more important things people should be getting mad about. If you don’t like something said in a movie, don’t see that movie!
    • Really Really Bad Headline: This happens too much.
    • Dribble – Utah: Great designs here. I wish I could do stuff like this.
    • PHP SOAP Extension: I had to do some work with SOAP this week and found this link to be helpful. I’ll also probably do a full write up on using SOAP with PHP and the problems I ran into.

    iPad Demo Thoughts

    April 5, 2010

I played with an iPad on display at Best Buy today, and I’ve got to say, I don’t hate it. After reading about it, I bashed it for the same reasons I bashed the iPhone/iPod Touch, not to mention that in my not-so-humble opinion, it is an awful ebook reader and won’t hold a candle to the Kindle. See my thoughts after the break.
