In the upcoming weeks, I’ll be wrapping up what has turned into a little speaking tour. This year I’ve already gone to Austin, Lancaster, did @shoptalkshow and held some events locally in Scranton/NEPA. Over the summer of 2013 I managed to get into the Google Glass Explorers program and got my hands on a set for myself. After using it for a while, especially spending time in the browser, I realized that this can (and likely will) change the way people will browser the web; Glass is only one of many pieces of wearable technology on the market and/or set to come out soon. With that in mind, I decided to write an article called The Web Designer’s Guide to Google Glass with the promise of an ebook coming out on the same topic. I’m happy to announce that book is finished and will be out in early March!
It’s time for my annual Favorites of the Year post. Much like 2012, 2013 was a great year. I saw a dream of mine come true by getting my second book, Responsive Design with WordPress, published by PeachPit/New Riders. They’ve published most of the books that I read to learn about web design/development, so it’s a real honor to have my work published through them. And of-course, there’s all of the tech and media of the year. Here are my favorites.
I’m happy to announce that my second book, Responsive Design with WordPress is out today online and in bookstores. It’s published through Peachpit/New Riders and I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out.
If you’ve been milling around the site lately, or follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, or Dribbble, you’ll know I’ve been working on a book. Last week I officially launched the site for @NEPABlogCon and I’m happy today to officially announce my second book, Responsive Design with WordPress.
Responsive Design with WordPress shows readers Responsive Web Design principles, as well as how to develop responsively when using WordPress. With a greater push towards mobile and the emergence of Responsive Web Design (RWD), more and more WordPress developers are looking to create responsive themes for their websites. The book goes into detail, covering what default CSS classes WordPress uses and how to handle them when creating responsive designs. It shows how to implement the multiple images sizes and readers will learn to plan responsive layouts for common WordPress templates such as Archives, Search, Comments, how to find responsive friendly plugins, and more.
I got the idea earlier this year when I was doing a lot of work creating responsive themes in WordPress and felt that this would be a great follow up to my first book, Building WordPress Themes from Scratch. I decided to send a proposal to a Peachpit/New Riders (or Voices that Matter), a publisher I deeply respect as they’ve published some amazing works by Jeffrey @Zeldman, Dan Cederholm (@simplebits), Jesse Friedman (@professor), Ethan Marcotte (@beep) and more. I was put in touch with Michael Nolan and am eternally grateful that he has given me the chance to write this book with a fantastic team of people.

I’m teaching a couple of web development classes this semester and have been receiving a lot of questions as to what books would serve as good resources. Here’s a short list, starting with the ones I’ve chosen for my classes.
: This book taught me everything I know about the right want to develop websites. Dan Cederholm is a pro and a great teacher who will take you through doing things, and making them bulletproof.: Once you’re comfortable with HTML, CSS, and PHP, you might want to get into WordPress. This book is an excellent starting point.: Responsive Design is all the rage now, and for good reason. This book will tell you the principles of RWD and how to implement it in your site.As you probably know, I also have a book, Building WordPress Themes from Scratch. However, there have been some changes the publisher has been doing lately and I am working with them to get the book in my hands. More on that here.
Finally, I have another book coming out in December called Responsive Design with WordPress. I think this would work really well after books 4 and 5 on the above list. Keep an eye out for it; maybe I’ll even do a giveaway or two.

Lately I have been receiving a lot of questions regarding the availability of my book, Building WordPress Themes from Scratch. After speaking with the publisher, Rockable Press, it seems they’ve had to make some unfortunate changes regarding their distribution model. From their website:
All Rockable Press books are now exclusively available with any Tuts+ Premium subscription, where you can download our entire library as well as accessing a huge number of courses, tutorials and guides.
At this point, the only way to get a hold of my book is to signup for a Tuts+ Premium subscription, which is $20/mo or $15/mo if you pay for a year in advance. I understand that this might not be the best option for some people, though I will say you get access to a lot of great resources.
I am currently working with the good folks at Rockable Press about other options to get the book into your hands, including the possibility of distributing it myself. I will continue to update my website with any progress and news as it become available.
I also wanted to thank everyone for their support and interest. This was my first book and it was very well received. I am currently working on my second WordPress book (out December). Keep an eye out for news on that as well!
