    The Yankees

    Joe Torre after the 2000 World Series

    With the Yankees’ 2007 Season coming to a close a couple of days ago with their loss against the Indians, there has been a lot of buzz over who will stay and who will go. There has been a lot of buzz about “The end of a dynasty.” There has just been a lot of buzz. The biggest concern for most people is whether Joe Torre will stay or go. The answers to the other questions will follow.

    At almost 22 years old, I grew up with Joe Torre as the Yankee manager. Being a baseball fan all my life and making the decision to be a Yankee fan in 1995, I became a die hard. Don Mattingly was my favorite player. I was crushed when they lost against the Mariners in the ALDS. Then Joe Torre was named manager. Derek Jeter became the regular Shortstop. 1996 was a great year for the Yankees. Even after dropping 0-2 against the Braves, I didn’t lose faith- I knew we would win. I was 10 and painfully optimistic. Then again, so was Torre, who told Steinbrenner the same thing. They won their first World Series since 1978, and under the management of Torre, would go on to win in 98, 99 and 2000 as well. They’ve made it to the playoffs every year he’s managed them. Torre is the most successful post season manager in history.

    So what’s my point? As I said before, if Torre goes, the other questions will be answered. Mo and Posada have already threatened to leave. They are two staples of the team. A-Rod is up in the air as to if he will opt out of his contract or not, but I bet a Torre firing will make the decision easier. Will it be the end of the Yankee dynasty? Maybe for a while. And as a kid who grew up on a successful Yankee team, I sure as hell don’t want to wait another 18 years for a World Series title. This was a great year for the Yankees. Every player had sometime to offer. They picked up a few great rookies who will only get better with experience. 2008 is shaping up to be great…if Torre stays. If not, the team will fall apart and things won’t look so great anymore.

    This team has been through a lot together. Torre is like a father figure to a lot of the team and a hero in New York. I think out of respect, for his skill and insight as well as for his character, George should keep him on until he is ready to leave. Firing Torre will make things much worse. Not better.

    Materazzi’s header to tie the game up, Buffon’s incredible save in OT from Zidane’s header and of course, Fabio Grosso Penalty Kick to seal the win.

    Wait a minute…

    I’m not usually one to complain about the officials, but the Umps in game 5 of Yanks/Angels really screwed the Yankees over. The call of Cano came out of no where, and made us give up loaded bases. The second call of “safe” at first should have been out, and cost us a run. When Torre goes out to argue, you know there is a problem.

    I will concede that Santana pitched a good game.

    Yankees vs. RedSox

    Yanks vs. Sox

    The Yankees play the Red Sox this weekend in a 3 game series to end the season, possibly permenantly for one of the teams. As the standings read now, Yanks are one game up on the BoSox, who are tied for the wild card with Cleavland. Wang, Johnson and Moose vs. Wells, Wakefield and Schilling. I’m worried about sunday’s game to say the least, as Moose has been subpar. But so has Schilling. Really, both teams have kind of weak pitching. This series should be a slugfest hopefully ending in the Yanks taking the series.

    As for Cleavland, they are playing the White Sox, who clinched AL Central yesterday. That means they are in no matter what. If the Indians sweep the ChiSox, the loser of the Yanks-BoSox is going home, soiled and shamed. It will be a very interesting and nerve-wrecking weekend. Let’s hope the yanks come out on top! Later.

    GAA

    So I think im pretty much done with uploading Pictures of Ireland. If you want to see more, you can view them from my friends’ webshots- here and here. If I find any more in the multitude I have, Ill post them. In a related story, Jen (the second link) got pictures developed from the Galic (GAA) game we went to. It was Dublin and Wexford in the Semi Finals. Dublin won. It was a Croke Park (same place as the U2 Concert) and teh atmosphere was incredible. 90,000 people going crazy, chanting and singing, and the sport is intense. It’s like a mix between Soccer (football) and Rugby, and some basketball. There are goal posts (1 point) and an actual goal (3 points). When Dublin scored a goal to put us ahead of wexford, teh crowed went wild. We were in Hill 16, the hill where the big Dublin fans go to cheer for their team. Its called Hill 16 because a battle against the British took place there and 16 Brits were killed. The game was a good time- I have never seen so much enery or so many blue jerseys being worn at the same time in my life. Later!

    The Yankees

    I love baseball. More so, the yankees. I am glad to see that we have battled back from 4th place and way out to now be ahead of the Boston Red Sox and just 4.5 games behind Baltimore. The team has really been hitting lately and its nice watching games where you aren’t get slaughtered, or constantly loosing. Later!

    Baseball Season!

    The Yankees kicked off the season yesterday by playing the Red Sox. They won 9-2. Johnson was for the most part unhittable last night, and the team as a whole did great. Tino made he debut back in pinstripes during the 7th inning- he made a phenomenal play to end the inning. The team seemed to play as a team- as oppose to sometimes last year. Also- our bullpen is looking very good this year. Johnson came out after 6, leaving it to the bullpen, who only let up one run. Boomer on the other hand (who is now on the BoSox), didn’t pitch so hot. He hit Giambi twice. It’s good to be watching baseball again- im very excited for the season. Game two of the series vs Boston- tomorrow at one. Mussina is pitching for us.
