2017 Summer Reading List

I’ve been trying to read more – and to that end, more fiction. I read 15 books last year (better than my one-per-month goal) and all were non-fiction except one. So this year, I’m committing reading more books (18) and more fiction (6). Here’s what I’ve got on the docket as we go into the summer.

Start Your Podcast with The Podcast Starter Kit

When I was in grammar school my 2nd Grade teacher, Ms, McCullough,  came up to me and asked if I wanted to be in something called, “Drama Club.” I had no idea what that was, but she insisted that it would be fun and I’d be really good at it; I agreed, and we called my mom to get permission.

It turns out Drama Club was both fun, and I was good at it. My first role was a munchkin in The Wizard of Oz (I was very short). I stuck with Drama all throughout grammar and high school, ending my run in college. But it’s something that shaped me and something that I loved to do. I miss it a lot some days and feel part of the reason I love to teach and speak publicly is that it has the feeling of performing. There’s something else that I do that helps me ‘perform’: podcasting.

My Morning Routine & Free New eBook!

A month or so ago my friend Jonothon Kneeper reached out to me about my morning routine, mentioning that he was compling data for a book he was writing. I’m happy to say the book, Win Your Dayis live on Amazon and you can get it for free today (Feb. 4th)! It has lots of great information from all sorts of folks on how they start their day. I’ve always had an interest in morning routines and have placed a big focus on mine as a way to make sure I start my day off right.

I’m getting the itch to write another book. It’s been about 2 years since I really got into the groove of writing Responsive Design with WordPress and about a year and a half since it came out.

I’ve been kicking around a lot of ideas to coincide with other projects I’m working on, including 100 Words and TIL Podcast. Perhaps a book of short stories or something.

I do have other ideas for tech books – specifically WordPress – but I want to seek a broader audience. I’m not sure I’m ready to write a fiction book yet, but something with more appeal, definitely.

Summer Reading

Admittedly, I have not been reading as much as I ‘d like to this year. I was hoping to read 2 books a month; unfortunately I started more than I’ve finished. That is, up until last weekend when I went to the beach. I managed to read 3 books over the course of 4 days. Allow me to tell you about them.

Note: There are no spoilers in this post! Feel free to read ahead.

A1NCnYrThjL._SL1500_I’ve been trying to read more; it isn’t working out the way I had hoped, but I’m still making the effort. I have started at least 3 books without finishing them, but right now I’m reading Gumption by Nick Offerman. I loved Paddle Your Own Canoe and couldn’t wait for the follow-up title by Ron Swanson.

It’s 21 essays about great Americans and how the exhibited gumption in their lives. I’ve made it through the Free Masons and am on Idealists. While preachy at times, I think it’s an excellent book so far. It’s definitely adding to my already long reading list.
