The first installment of the Safe Social Media Series is on the three year old web service and recent internet sensation, Twitter. My accolades for Twitter are not unknown, however that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t exercise some caution in using it. Like any platform that allows you to speak freely, you should consider these tips when using Twitter.
It’s no secret that I love the show Home Improvement, especially if you know me personally or follow me on Twitter. As a freelancer I have the luxury of watching it everyday in the middle of the afternoon, and I got to thinking- there is a lot programmers and web developers can learn from Tim Taylor and his antics.
I remember a time where PDAs and smart phones were a sign of status- you were either a business man or a tech geek. Now smartphones and internet enabled phones are as ubiquitous as the air we breath (you like that?). As someone who spends a lot of time on the mobile web (or the web in general), I thought I’d provide a list of some mobile sites that I find useful.
Car Fax’s Marketing Campaign is awesome because they don’t tagret their audience, they target their audience’s customers. Car Fax wants car dealers to subscribe to their service, so instead of telling car dealers how great Car Fax is, they tell people who buy cars how great Car Fax is, and make car dealers who don’t have Car Fax look bad. This leads car dealers to subscribe because they want to keep their customers.
A major complaint about Windows Vista is that everytime you try to do something, Vista asks you if you want to allow it or not. Anyone who uses Vista immediately experiences this when they try to do anything. Today, we turn off that feature.
This is for all of use Blackberry (possibly only on Verizon Wireless) users. The Blackberry Web Panel allows you to manage (add/edit/delete and filter) all of the email addresses going to your blackberry device. You can also change PINs if you ever switch devices. I use it to skip sending emails I send to my device, as well as a few filters to make sure I don’t get repeat emails. I strongly recommend taking a look at it if  you have several email addresses forwarding to your Blackberry.
Tomorrow, my youngest brother Robby is going away to college. While I’ve had 2 other brothers go away, this is different. He’s going to Florida Tech, which is the furthest away, and with no friends (an experience I didn’t have). I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t being a little protective, but I think this is sound advice for any incoming freshman, which is the reason I’m posting it here.
